Arrive, meet your local guide, and settle in. If time and access allow, visit Shah-e Doh Shamshira Mosque or take a short orientation walk.
Day 2 — Wednesday, 26 May | Fly to Kandahar
Overnight: Kandahar
Fly from Kabul to Kandahar. Visit the Shrine of the Cloak (Khirqa Sharif) and Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani, subject to local access.
Day 3 — Thursday, 27 May | Kandahar
Overnight: Kandahar
Continue exploring Kandahar’s historic and cultural landmarks. If accessible, visit Chilzina (Forty Steps), a rock-cut site above the city, and explore the old bazaar with a local guide.
Day 4 — Friday, 28 May | Drive from Kandahar to Herat
Overnight: Herat
Begin an early, full-day drive to Herat. The road journey is long; plan it only with a vetted local driver, current route advice, and daylight travel. The US State Department warns that road conditions can be poor and that robbery and kidnapping risks exist outside Kabul.
Day 5 — Saturday, 29 May | Herat
Overnight: Herat
Visit Herat Citadel and the Friday Mosque (Great Mosque of Herat). Explore the historic bazaar and, where accessible, the old caravanserai area.
Day 6 — Sunday, 30 May | Herat and flight to Kabul
Overnight: Kabul
Visit the Musalla Minarets, Khwaja Abd Allah Ansari Shrine, and Gawhar Shad Madrasa and Mausoleum, subject to access. Fly from Herat to Kabul and stay overnight. These are among Herat’s major historical and cultural landmarks.
Day 7 — Monday, 31 May | Fly to Mazar-i-Sharif
Overnight: Mazar-i-Sharif
Fly from Kabul to Mazar-i-Sharif. Visit the Blue Mosque, also known as the Shrine of Hazrat Ali.
Day 8 — Tuesday, 1 June | Ancient Balkh
Overnight: Mazar-i-Sharif
Take a day trip to Balkh, ancient Bactria. See the old city walls and Bala Hissar fortress area. If open and accessible, visit Noh Gonbad Mosque (Haji Piyada) and the Shrine and Mosque of Khwaja Abu Nasr Parsa, also called the Green Mosque.
Day 9 — Wednesday, 2 June | Fly back to Kabul
Overnight: Kabul
Return by domestic flight from Mazar-i-Sharif to Kabul. Keep the day flexible in case of schedule changes.
Day 10 — Thursday, 3 June | Drive to Bamyan
Overnight: Bamyan
Travel by road from Kabul to Bamyan with a local driver, leaving early and travelling in daylight. Route choice should be confirmed locally shortly before departure.
Day 11 — Friday, 4 June | Bamyan Valley
Overnight: Bamyan
Explore the Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley, including the cliff niches associated with the monumental Buddhas, nearby caves, and viewpoints where access permits. The valley is a UNESCO World Heritage property.
Day 12 — Saturday, 5 June | Bamyan and return to Kabul
Overnight: Kabul
If access and timing allow, visit Shahr-e-Zahak (Red City) before returning by road to Kabul. The long drive makes an early start essential.
Day 13 — Sunday, 6 June | Kabul
